Wave inaugural Boys Basketball Preview draws large numbers

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Boys Basketball Program held their inaugural ‘Green Wave Boys Basketball Preview’ fund raiser, Saturday, in the GHS gymnasium.

“We had tremendous support from the community, sponsorship for the event and tremendous support from all the parents of my kids,” said an appreciative Greenville varsity coach Kyle Joseph. “They are the ones that worked the concessions, took tickets and did all sorts of different things to help me.”

The evening provide an opportunity for fans to be introduction to each of the 2017-18 basketball teams and cheerleaders. The preview was capped off with a full four-quarter intra-squad scrimmage.

“The support we received from community members is a big for us,” Joseph stated. “We want to have fun, but as a fund raiser this is what we use to help run our program.”

“A large chunk of the money – the most important is to fund our summer events,” said Joseph. “We will do shootouts again this summer but my goal is to start doing overnight camps so the kids don’t have to worry about it (finances). We’re going to be at summer events and we want to be able to pay for as many those kids to come as we can because they are pricey.”

“Those events are great. Not only do we use those camps as part of our 10 coaching days during the summer to get better as a team, but they are so valuable just from a bonding standpoint, from a standpoint of getting high schoolers to a college campus who may have never been to a college campus before.”

“Just try to get them excited about those kind of things, not necessarily because you want to play basketball in college but just about going to college,” added Coach Joseph. “That’s the big chunk of the money.”

Other benefits from the night’s proceeds will go to the purchase of equipment improvements, uniform improvements and an occasional team meal.
