Wave entertains Stebbins in opening day twin bill

GREENVILLE – The Green Wave varsity baseball team dropped a twin bill at the hands of the visiting Stebbbins Indians with both losses coming in the final inning of play.

“It was a tough day,” said Greenville Coach Eric Blumenstock. “We played so well in the scrimmages against some really good teams and we’ve hit the ball so well against some really good teams.”

The teams took a 0-0 score into the seventh and final inning of game one with Tyler Netzley keeping the Indians off the board through six complete.

“Netzley threw a heck of a game the first time around,” said Blumenstock.

Stebbins sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh to take a four-run lead with the Wave going down in order in the bottom of the inning for a final 4-0 score.

“Came out the first game and saw a kid with a sinker and that is pretty much all he threw,” Blumenstok said. “Kept everything low. We couldn’t square it up. We fought hard.”

AJ Bowers took the mound for the Wave in game two of the doubleheader.

“AJ threw a heck of a game the second game,” said Blumenstock.

With the Green Wave tailing 2-1 and coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth, Brandon Beyke legged out an infield single followed with a steal of second.

Peter Pandy laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt moving Beyke to third paving the way for a Grant Minnich single to left tying the score at 2-2 where the score would stand after five-innings of play.

Neither team would cross the plate in the sixth sending the teams to the final inning of regulation play knotted up.

A strikeout and a popup to third had Stebbins looking at two outs with none on only to take advantage of a walk and three consecutive singles to plate three runs and take a 5-2 lead with the Wave coming to the plate for their final at-bat.

Greenville went quietly in their half of the inning falling to the Indians 5-2.

“Both their pitcher threw just as well,” Blumenstock stated. “It was one inning both games… scored a couple of runs on us and we just couldn’t come back.”

“Hopefully we learn from this and we’ll come back and fight hard on Monday,” added Blumenstock
