CLAYTON – The Versailles Lady Tigers coasted to a 3-0 District Championship over the Badin Lady Rams.
“Very strong…I liked what I saw,” Versailles Coach Kenzie Bruggeman said of the Lady Tigers fast start. “That’s what I want with getting to five first and then getting ten. We did a really nice job.”
Badin open set one with a 1-0 lead only to have the Lady Tigers real off 10 unanswered points to take an early 10-1 advantage.
Versailles would hold its largest lead of the night; a 17 pointer with 22-5 showing on the board.
Badin would close out the first set with a 5-3 run for a 25-10 Versailles win.
“It fell off at the end of the first game and we just didn’t get that fire, that intensity back the rest of the game,” Bruggeman noted. “That’s a little disappointing to me.”
Set two saw the game tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 before the Lady Tigers would score four unanswered points to lead 7-3 and double the score on Badin at 14-7.
Badin would battle back to trail 15-13 before the girls from Versailles would outscore the Lady Rams 10-3 to close out set two with a 25-16 win.
“That’s what we need to continue to do,” coach Bruggeman said of getting most of her players in the match. “Really spread out the offense and make sure that everybody is an offensive threat so their block doesn’t know where to go.”
Set three saw six ties in the early goings with the last coming at 7-7. Versailles would take advantage of a 4-0 run to lead 11-7 only to have Badin battle back to make it a one point game trailing 12-11.
The Lady Tigers would outscore Badin 13-7 the remainder of the way to take set three by a 25-18 score and claim the District Championship.
“I think that is good that we can at least push past it enough to win the game,” Bruggeman said of the three game sweep, “but I really don’t want us putting ourselves in that situation. I would rather have more of what the first game was and getting to those little chunks of five sooner. I don’t like that back and forth stuff, but we came out with a win so I am happy.
With the win, the Lady Tigers advance in tournament play taking on the Cross County Conference Champion Miami East Lady Vikings in a 7:30 pm Thursday matchup at Kettering Fairmont High School.
“It will be something that we haven’t seen so far this tournament,” Coach Bruggeman said of the Lady Vikings. “We have been able to watch Miami East a couple of times, so I think with the three days of practice leading up to Thursday…I think that will be enough time to get prepared.”
