Versailles drops heartbreaker

CLAYTON – The Versailles Tigers and the Miami East Vikings played wire-to-wire with the Vikings pulling out a last second 51-49 win.

The Division III sectional tournament game would see a total of 14 lead changes, seven in Period No. 1, two in the third and five in the final period of play with the game tied three times in the third quarter and the fourth period showing the score knotted two times.

Three Brett McEldowney three-pointers and a trey each from Keaton McEldowney and Justin Ahrens accounted for 15 of the Tigers 17 first quarter points to take a 17-16 lead to second period play.

The second period had Miami East putting 17 points on the board while Versailles was two behind at 15 points in the quarter to trail the Vikings 33-32 at the break.

An Austin Knapke free-throw opened third quarter scoring knotting the score at 33-33 with 7:06 on the clock only to have the Vikings go 1-2 at the line and hit a basket to lead 36-33 at 6:24 bringing a Versailles timeout.

The Vikings would push their lead to 38-33 with the Tigers battling back with Justin Ahrens’ 2-2 at the line and three-pointer at 3:05 knotting the score at 38-38.

Justin Ahrens would use a break-a-way slam dunk and a free-throw for eight consecutive Versailles’ points to lead 41-38 before Miami East would make it a 41-41 score going to the final period of play.

Justin Ahrens would make it 11 straight Tigers points opening fourth quarter play with an old fashioned three-point play by way of a stick-back and free-throw giving Versailles an early fourth quarter 44-41 advantage.

A Miami East basket and 2-2 at the line had the Vikings leading 45-44 at 5:05 followed by a Knapke drive to the hoop giving Versailles a 46-45 advantage with 4:10 on the clock.

The Vikings would move back on top 47-46 at 2:50 before a Justin Ahrens three-pointer from the top of the key had the Tigers taking a 49-47 lead with 1:35 on the board.

Miami East would make it a 49-49 game with a goal at 1:24 where the score would stand until the Vikings would go to the charity stripe with 0:027 showing to knock down back-to-back tosses to win by a 51-49 score.
