LYNN, Ind. – The first time Union City and Tri met during the regular season, the Lady Indians came away with a 54-48 victory – clinching a share of a conference title. On Saturday, the teams will do battle on the court once again… only this time a Sectional Championship is on the line.
Union City advanced to the tournament milestone game after taking down Seton Catholic on Friday in the Sectional semi-final round.
With Union City’s point guard, Justiss Cantu, getting into early foul trouble, Coach Sarah Hines was forced to make adjustments from her bench. UC kept the pressure on the Lady Cardinals, while scoring 21 and holding a 10-point lead after the first eight minutes of play.
Seton Catholic got to within five points late in the second quarter before Coach Hines called a timeout to regroup her team. Immediately following the timeout, the Lady Indians went on a 7-0 run to end the first half with a 35-23 lead.
“They responded to what we went over exactly like they were supposed to following the timeout,” Coach Hines said.
Union City did not derail from that momentum – adding to their lead in the second half and taking a 61-42 win.
The Lady Indians “big” junior forwards – Courtney Wise and Baylee Hartman – came away with a pair of double-doubles in the victory. Wise scored a game high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Hartman added 19 points, 11 boards and eight steals of her own. Senior Madeline Adams recorded 13 points and junior Kelsey Zimmers added four more. Junior Kora Kerns came away with five steals to help secure the victory over the Lady Cardinals.
“Now we need to get ready for the Sectional Championship game,” Hines added. “We have to play four solid quarters of basketball if we want to win!”
The ISHAA Class 1A #56 Sectional Championship will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at Randolph Southern High School in Lynn, Ind.
