ANSONIA – The Ansonia Tigers junior high football team defeated the visiting Bethel Bees Tuesday night in a game that was not as close as the 26-20 score indicates.
The Bees took the opening kickoff and marched down the field only to fumble the ball away with the Tigers recovering the loose ball at their own 30-yard stripe at 3:59 in the first period.
It took only 0:58 for the local boys to put together a 70-yard drive with Brock Shellhaas scoring on a touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion attempt had the Tigers on top 6-0.
Ansonia would take a 12-0 lead with a pass from Isaac Barga to Hunter Buckingham on the first play of the second quarter. The two-point conversion run came up short.
A Bethel TD and failed two-conversion attempt had the Tigers holding a 12-6 advantage at 4:41 in the second period, a score that would stand at the end of the first half of play.
The Tigers would extend its lead to 18-6 at 3:30 in the third with a Shellhaus TD run. The conversion attempt failed.
The combination of Barga to Buckingham would strike again with 0:10 on the third quarter clock for an Ansonia touchdown pass.
Ethan Fischer carried into the end zone on the two-point conversion giving the home team a comfortable 26-6 advantage.
With the Tigers going to its bench, the Bees would add a touchdown through the air with 2:40 on the fourth quarter game clock for a 26-12 score and tack on a final TD and two-point conversion at 0:12 for a Tigers 26-20 win.
