MINSTER – The Greenville Lady Wave softball team took their game on the road to defeat the Minster Lady Wildcats 10-0 in a five-inning run rule game, a game Lady Wave freshman Baylee Petry pitched a perfect game.
“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville Coach Jerrod Newland. “Proud of the program and the kids. I love the fact that we play for the name on the front of the shirt.”
The Lady Wildcats sit tied for second place in the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) coming into the night with a 16-8 season record.
Greenville’s freshman shortstop Morgan Gilbert flawlessly fielded eight ground-outs on the night to keep the perfect game intact.
After a slow start the Lady Wave got on track and took advantage of a Sydney Grote home run out of the park to gain the road win.
“Took a few to get going then the train was a rolling,” said Newland. “”Gilbert fielded eight ground ball outs, Grote hit one out, 15 up – 15 down for Petry.”
With the win, the Lady Wave improve to 25-3 on the season including a current 19 game win streak while outscoring their opponents 298-36 with many of the Lady Wave’s outs at the plate coming by way of Coach Newland’s “leaving the base early” on the base paths.
“Playing hard, having fun and getting ready for the run,” said Newland. “We just appreciate the opportunity to play elite competition.”
The Division II Lady Wave’s three season losses all came to Division I teams including the State’s No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 D-I teams.
The Greenville girls have 14 season shutouts and 20 wins by way of game shortened run rule margins adding up to 80 percent of their wins coming by the run rule while going undefeated through the Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) American North twice during the current season.
With the 25th win of the season, Coach Jerrod Newland has an unprecedented 14 consecutive 25 win seasons at the helm of LWSB, an OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) high school softball program.
The Lady Wave take on Archbishop Alter in OHSAA sectional tournament play tomorrow, Tuesday, May 16 in a 5:00 pm start time at Tippecanoe MS – 555 North Hyatt Street, Tipp City.
“Huge day tomorrow as Wave Nation rolls into Tipp with Sectional Title on the line,” concluded Coach Newland.
