VANDALIA – The Lady Wave softball team run-ruled the Vandalia-Butler Lady Aviators 13-3 in the minimum five-innings to knock off Butler on back-to-back nights.
“Great team win tonight,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Came out and got 15 hits and 13-3 in five.”
The Lady Wave defeated Butler in a 5-4 Monday night game at Lady Wave Stadium before taking their game on the road for a Tuesday night contest.
“Knew we would play sharper and cleaner,” Newland said of the Tuesday night game, “and we did.”
Sydney Grote followed up Monday night’s three hit four RBI night with a three-hit five RBI game including a home run over the left-field fence giving the Lady Wave senior six-hits and nine-RBIs over a 24 hour span.
Greenville put two runs on the board in the top of the first with Butler plating a run in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 GHS lead after one.
The Lady Wave added four runs in the top of the second, two in the third while Butler was adding a single run in the bottom of the fourth to trail Greenville 8-2.
Greenville plated five fifth-inning runs to lead 13-2 with the Lady Aviators coming up short with a single run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Lady Wave the run-rule win and move to 5-0 in the GWOC American North and 9-3 overall.
“Played hard and had some fun,” Newland said following the game.
The Lady Wave banged out 15 hits on the day with Morgan Gilbert, Sydney Grote and Haleigh Mayo each accounting for three hits, while Nyesha Wright was picking up two hits on the night. Gilbert had a multiple RBI night, knocking in three.
Caitlin Christman opened on the mound for GHS allowing five hits and two runs, striking out three and walking one over four innings of work. Grace Shaffer closed out the night with one inning of work, allowing one run while striking out one and walking two.
