GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave used the combined pitching of the freshman duo of Baylee Petry and Caitlin Christman, facing the minimum number of batters while striking out 15-of-15 hitters to pick up a first round 18-0 OHSAA perfect game tournament win over Dayton’s Dunbar Lady Wolverines.
“Great day for Lady Wave softball,” said Greenville Coach Jerrod Newland. “First step on the ladder.”
Cassie Cromwell’s two run first-inning double plated Morgan Gilbert and Karsyn Shaffer in what proved to be all the runs the Lady Wave would need on the night to advance in tournament play.
An Alli Hill RBI double, a Petry RBI double, a Lani Shilt RBI single, a Shaffer RBI hit and a three run triple off the bat of Cromwell gave the Lady Wave a 9-0 lead after one with each of Greenville’s outs coming in Coach Newland fashion … liberally using the “runner leaving base early” option to keep the game from going deep into the night.
The Lady Wave made it an 11-0 game after two complete getting Petry and Courtney Bryson RBI singles while the Lady Wolverines earned their lone putout of the night other than the “runner leaving base early” by way of an infield popup.
The Greenville girls score seven third inning runs to lead 18-0 and bypassed their fourth inning plate appearance bringing the Lady Wolverines to bat in the top of the fifth.
The Dunbar girls went down striking out in order for the fifth consecutive inning with the Lady Wave moving on in tournament play.
“Played all 21 kids and can’t wait for the next few weeks,” Newland said of several remaining regular season games and the OHSAA tournament run.
The Lady Wave take a 22-3 season record and a 16 game win streak into second round Thursday night tournament action against the Lady Rams of Trotwood-Madison. The game has a 5:00 pm start time at Stebbins Field, home of the Lady Wave softball team.
“I enjoy the community support for the girls,” concluded Newland. “The train is rolling and it’s Akron (home of the OHSAA girl’s state tournament) or bust.”
The Greenville LWSB team travels to Xenia today, Wednesday, May 10th to face the GWOC American South Lady Buccaneers in a regular season game with a 5:00 p.m. start time.
