ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans played well in a 40-36 Saturday home loss to the visiting Fort Recovery Lady Indians with the visitors taking the first half by four points and the teams playing even in second half play.
“I can’t be to heart-broken getting beat by a team like that with that close a score when we work hard,” said Arcanum coach Michael Dean. “Teams like that are fundamentally sound and well coached.”
Taylor Gray third basket gave the Lady Trojans a 7-6 lead at 4:45 in the first before the taller Fort Recovery team would take the opening period 14-11 with Gray hitting six points and Kayla O’Daniel adding five points with two buckets and a free throw.
“I have some height,” noted Dean. “I’m real happy with my freshman Taylor Gray. She is coming along nicely. She’s making those changes that she needs to make and transition into a better ballplayer.”
“I ask a lot of my freshmen,” Dean added. “It’s a work in progress and I’ll take these girls any day over anybody else.”
The Lady Indians added a point to its lead in period No. 2 outscoring Arcanum 8-7 to take a 22-18 lead to the break. O’Daniel led the Lady Trojans with five points in the quarter including a three pointer and Gray adding a field goal.
The teams played even in the third with each adding 10-points to the board. Arcanum got balanced third period scoring with Madelyn Fearon hitting a trey, Garno a bucket and free throw and Camille Pohl and O’Daniel each knocking down a pair of free throws sending the teams to the final period with Fort Recovery holding a 32-28 advantage.
The final quarter had the teams again playing even with both squads adding eight points to the board. Gray led the Lady Trojans with five points in the quarter including 3-3 at the line and O’Daniel hit her second triple of the day.
“They prepare their kids,” Dean said of the Lady Indians staff. “They know how to make adjustments in the game. They shut down our quick transition game. They forced us into that half-court game and slowed it down – and with those two big girls that’s tough to take.”
“Kudos to my JV coach, Nicole Pohlman,” added Dean. “She is really helping me implement what style of basketball we want we see that with the JV. They are 11-0 and that is transferring over with the varsity when we practice. There’s 15-16 varsity players there that work each other hard to get each other ready.”
O’Daniel led Arcanum with 15-points followed by Gray’s 13-points.
