NEW MADISON – The Lady Patriots were in a good one for 3 quarters with perennial Cross County Conference power Miami East and needed a strong defensive push in the fourth quarter led by Lissa Siler along with a good inside – outside performance from Maddie Downing and Rylee Sagester to earn the 57-44 win.
Tri-Village got 6 points from Downing and 2 from Sagester but found themselves trailing 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Miami East playing in their 1-2-2 zone was making it very difficult to get good shots and when the PATS finally got shots they weren’t falling.
Morgan Hunt helped eliminate playing every possession into the teeth of the defense by scoring 6 points in the open floor and Maddie Downing added 6 as well as the Patriots clung to a 22-21 lead at the half.
Miami East caught fire in the 3rd quarter connecting on 5 triples to go along with 10 for the game. The Patriots were trading two for threes and trailed 40-38 heading into the final stanza.
Tri-Village went full court man to man pressure spearheaded by senior Lissa Siler who was all over the place and the Patriots started to turn the Vikings over while contesting every shot that shut down their torrid outside shooting pace.
“The (East) played great, I don’t think it’s like we didn’t play great on defensive they just made shots,” Tri-Village coach Brad Gray said. “They haven’t been a great 3 point shooting team all year and today they made 10 and their best 3-point shooter was just shooting high 20 percent.”
The defensive effort proved valuable as Miami East didn’t hit another three and in fact scored just 4 points in the final quarter.
Meanwhile Rylee Sagester was finally able to break out and connect on 3 of her 5 triples in the game in the 4th quarter and Maddie Downing again came up big inside the paint.
“We’ve got to get the ball inside and we are so much better when we are an inside out team,” Gray stated after the game. With the kids we have in the post it’s even more important as we know when Maddie gets a touch or Meghan gets a touch teams are going to double them and with us being dangerous on the perimeter we have to put teams in a position to double when that happens we can get those outside shots.” Gray added.
The Patriots went on to claim the 57-44 win. Maddie Downing led with 23 points, Rylee Sagester had 19 and Morgan Hunt 13.
Gray could breathe a sigh of relief to after the game knowing he saw Miami East prepared and give their best and his team had to fight hard for a whole game to win it.
“I have a lot of respect for Miami East coach Bruce Vanover and what he does. They are always well prepared and well coached and this might be his best coaching I’ve seen from him yet.” Gray concluded.
The Patriots improve to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference and will travel to Newton on Tuesday.
