Lady Jets earn comeback win over Arcanum

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans and the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets played a spirited non-conference Saturday varsity volleyball match in support of “Volley for the Cure”

“Volley for the Cure is a wonderful day with all the donations going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” said FM Coach Angie Filbrun. “A good day to get communities together – just having a good time and having fun.”

“The positive today is that we raised a lot of money for a great cause,” said Arcanum Coach Macey O’Dell.

The Lady Trojans opened the match taking the first two sets to lead 2-0 only to have Franklin Monroe battle back to score a 3-2 win taking the final three sets on the day.

“Lost the first two and had to battle back,” said Filbrun. “It’s a long day, it’s a great day. I love this day. It’s community support and having a good time, but it’s tough. We got here early to watch our junior high and be supportive. To come and play after sitting around for four hours, it’s tough but we did it.”

“We just got tired in the end,” said O’Dell. “We didn’t fight and they were wanting it more than we did.”

FM took an early 5-1 set one lead with the Lady Trojans charging back to even the score at 7-7 for the first of eight ties in the opening set.

With the score even at 15-15, the Lady Jets would move out to a 19-15 advantage only to have Arcanum knot the score at 21-21 followed by ties at 22-22 and 23-23.

The FM girls took a 24-23 lead bringing a timeout from the Arcanum bench with the Lady Trojans coming out of the 60-second break to score the final three points of the set and take the first game by a 26-24 score.

Set No. 2 had the Lady Trojan bolting out to leads of 5-0 and 8-1 with FM calling for a timeout.

Arcanum got its first 10-point lead of the day at 16-6 and went on to go up two sets to none with a 25-15 win.

The Lady Trojans double the score at 6-3 on the visitors early in game three with FM fighting back to even the score 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 before going on a 5-0 run to lead 14-9 and go on to a 25-18 win sending the match to a fourth set.

Franklin Monroe took a 9-4 early set four advantage with the home team battling back to trail 10-8 before the Lady Jets pushed its lead to 22-15.

The Lady Trojans scored five unanswered points to trail 22-20 only to have the FM girls score the final three points sending the match to a fifth and deciding 15-point set with a 25-20 set four win.

The Lady Jets wasted little time winning the fifth match darting out to a 13-1 advantage on their way to a 15-4 victory giving Franklin Monroe a 3-2 win on the day.

“Sometime I have to tell them, ‘you got to dig deep – it’s in your heart,’” said Filbrun. “It’s a mental game. If you can come out and want it – it’s not about volleyball skills – it’s about wanting the game and they did. I am so proud of them.”

“Somehow we’re going to have to come back and fight next week.” O’Dell said following the game. “We just got to keep fighting.”

Earlier in the day, the Arcanum faculty earned its first win in recent years over the FM faculty in the annual faculty volleyball match.
