UNION CITY, Ind. – The Union City Lady Indians volleyball team hosted the state-ranked Lady Bears of Monroe Central Tuesday night to open the 2017 season.
Though they were at the short end of the scoreboard all three sets (25-17, 21-25, 25-12), the Lady Indians never gave up against the Class 2A team.
“I liked how we came out and handled ourselves defensively. It was a tough match against a very good team, so all-in-all I am pleased with the ladies’ performance,” UC head coach Nancy Whitted told The Early Bird in a post-match interview. “We just need to get more aggressive on the offensive side, but I am confident we will be just fine as the season rolls on.”
With an experience on their side, including seven seniors, Coach Whitted says she expects a good run in the Tri-Eastern Conference this season.
Leading the team in kills was Maci Beam with 13, Mya Maloy with 7 and Morgan Wymer with 5. Beam also led in aces with 4, followed by Maloy and Jaz Kelsey with 3 each. Emily Cline led the team in digs with 13 followed by Grace Collins with 4. Leading the team in assists was Breann Ward with 20.
The Lady Indians hit the road for their first taste of TEC play on Thursday at Northeastern.
