Indians hit the hardwood with new coach

LYNN, Ind. – The Union City boys varsity basketball players hit the floor for the first time – under the direction of new Head Coach David Barger – Thursday afternoon at Randolph Southern High School in Lynn, Ind.

The three-team summer shootout included Union City, the Tri Titans and Randolph Southern Rebels. Following the first of three games, Union City played a two, 20 minute half match-up in the second game of the evening against conference foe Tri High. The Indians hung with the Titans, but were unable to fight back for the lead. Senior Isaac Jefferis looked ready to take over the leadership role at point guard for the team, while Junior Trevor Thompson had some good blocks on defense.

“I’m excited in the way Isaac (Jefferis) has stepped up and been a leader for us,” Coach Barger stated. “He has some big shoes to fill and he was quick to step forward and wanted a vocal role. He is going to be really good for us!”

“Trevor (Thompson), he is going to be a good ball player for us. He’s 6’4″…long and athletic,” coach added. “He is going to be a force inside when he learns to demand the ball.”

In game three, UC faced county rival Randolph Southern. Controlling the ball most of the game, the Indians saw big plays from juniors Zach Bradbury and Trevor Spence.

“We talked to Zach on the bench and told him we wanted him to score more and use the talent he is given,” explained Coach Barger. “After we said that I think he came back out and scored like 12 in a row!”

Union City is scheduled to host Greenville in a 6 p.m. Tuesday scrimmage at UCHS.
