GREENVILLE – Back-to-back perfect OHSAA Lady Wave softball games to open 2017 OHSAA tournament play moved the Greenville girls into the Division II sectional semi-finals with a 17-0 win over the Trotwood-Madison Lady Rams.
“Proud of the girls – moving on in tournament play,” said Greenville Coach Jerrod Newland. “We play for the name on the front.”
Greenville freshman, Baylee Petry, the GWOC’s lone 2017 20 game winner took the mound for the Lady Wave striking out the first two Lady Rams of the night while getting an unassisted Cassie Cromwell putout at first.
The Lady Wave wasted little time putting the game out of reach scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning while Coach Newland use the ol’ “leaving the base early” to bring the first inning to a close.
The Lady Wave used a game opening Morgan Gilbert single, an RBI Karsyn Shaffer single, Cassie Cromwell knocking in a run, an Alli Hill single and a Makayla Hanes RBI double to lead 3-0.
A Baylee Petry single to center, a Sydney Grote walk and a passed ball plated the Wave fourth run of the inning.
Back-to-back Lani Shilt and Courtney Bryson walks loaded the bases setting up consecutive RBI hit batsmen to Gilbert and Shaffer for a 6-0 GHS lead.
Cassie Crowell drilled a 2-RBI double upping the score to 8-0 followed by an RBI double off the bat of Hill and an RBI single to left from Hanes giving the Lady Wave a 10-0 double digit first inning lead.
Greenville would get an 11th run by way of a passed ball with Coach Newland bringing a halt to the inning with “leaving the base early” and GHS leading 11-0.
“We put the ball in play and played a little short game,” said Newland. “Ran the bases today and great things happened.”
Petry sat the Lady Rams down in order in the top of the second including two strikeouts but not before Coach Newland pulled his starters with two outs in the inning.
Greenville added four second inning runs with the big hits; an RBI Haleigh Mayo single, a 2-RBI single off the bat of Zoe Pressnall and the 15th run of the game from a Rams error.
Petry struck out the side in the top of the third for a total of seven strikeouts on the night.
Greenville used a Haleigh Mayo single to right, Cheyenne Knisley reaching by way of a hit batsman, Natea Davidson reaching on an error loading the bases for Zoe Pressnall picking up a hit batsman RBI giving the Wave a16-0 lead after three.
The second link of the Wave’s freshman pitching duo, Caitlin Christman, took over on the mound in the top of the fourth for the Lady Wave keeping the perfect game in tact throwing two strikeouts while getting defensive support with a four-to-three groundout.
A Megan Johnson single to left, a Madelyn Breig single to center, a Jaida Kelly walk and an RBI single from Alyssa York had the Lady Wave leading 17-0 with no outs in the bottom of the fourth calling for Coach Newland to play, “leave the base early” ball to close out the inning.
Two fifth-inning Christman strikeouts and a five-to-three ground out had the Lady Wave moving on in tournament play with its second perfect game on the tournament trail.
“Great day for Lady Wave softball,” said Newland. “Second step on the ladder to Akron.”
Baylee Petry and Caitlin Christman combined for two consecutive perfect games in tournament play.
“Both pitchers did well tonight,” Newland said. “I like both our freshmen on the mound.”
