GREENVILLE – Greenville junior pole vaulter Ryan Trick recently set back-to-back personal records (PR) on the same night with a vault of 14 foot 7 inches and following up with a vault of 15 feet 1 inch to give the Green Wave boys varsity track team two vaulters clearing the 15-foot mark in the same season, a first for GHS head varsity track and field coach Bill Plessinger.
“I’ve been here 22 (years) and no,” said Plessinger, “definitely never.”
“That 14 foot 6 inch has really been haunting him and he couldn’t get through it,” Greenville pole vault Coach Micah Coblentz said of Trick’s best vault leading up to Thursday night’s track meet with Richmond. “I knew he had the potential to go 15, so instead of going 14’6” we went to 14’7” which was a new PR for him … so he went over 14’7” and had a good vault there. Then I asked him if he wanted 15 or 15’1” and he said 15’1” and he cleared that on his second attempt.”
Greenville senior and recent Central Michigan University signee, AJ Frens’ current personal record is 16 feet. Frens is mending from a recent injury and is expected back soon.
“I’m tickled for him,” Coblentz said. “He works hard and he’s always been kinda in the shadows with AJ being there. With AJ being hurt he’s really taken on the role of being the lead vaulter. I couldn’t be happier. It’s always been a dream of mine to have two 15 footers which is unheard of.”
The GHS boy’s pole vault record stands at 16 feet 1 inch held by Kevin Leland.
“He is setting himself up well to have a great year next year,” added Coblentz.
“School history … that’s number four all-time,” Coblentz said of Trick’s 15 foot 1 inch vault.
