GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave softball program went 3-0 Thursday night at Stebbins Field with the varsity girls defeating the Stebbins Lady Indians 10-2 while the Lady Wave JV squad was run ruling Stebbins 17-0 and the eighth graders used a 16-2 score to run rule the Springfield Lady Wildcats.
“It was a great day for the program a great day for Lady Wave softball,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Just love it – breath of fresh air. Just excited for the kids playing and opportunities. A lot of kids playing.”
The Lady Wave varsity took advantage of a 6-run fourth inning including a Nyesha Wright three run homer over the leftfield fence off the bat of sophomore centerfielder scoring Lani Shilt and Haleigh Mayo-Behnken ahead of the GHS sophomore center fielder.
“Nyesha Wright steps up and hits the ball over the fence,” Newland said. “You know, big-time players step up in big-time situations.”
Following a night the Lady Wave starters took the night off in a 17-0 run rule win over the Trotwood-Madison Lady Rams, the Greenville girls got off to a slow start on the night.
“Slow start – there wasn’t much enthusiasm right out of the get-go,” Newland said. “Bottom line – they get a couple on us.”
The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead after one inning of play before Greenville would get on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third to lead 3-1.
The visitors battled back with a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Lady Wave’s lead to 3-2 only have the Lady Wave put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 9-2 heading to the fifth inning of play.
Shilt singled to left in the bottom of the fifth to plate Morgan Gilbert with the Lady Wave’s tenth and final run of the night to stay perfect on the season with a 4-0 record.
Grace Shaffer tossed 3.2 innings to open on the mound for the Lady Wave allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two. Kennedy Fashner finished up the final 3.1 innings allowing no runs or hits.
The Lady Wave out hit Stebbins 7-3.
Wright went 2-4 on the day with 3-RBIs and 1-run scored. Shilt reached base four times going 2-2 with 2-walks, 1-RBI and 2-runs. Bryson went 2-2 with 2-runs scored and Mayo-Behnken was 1-3 with a walk, 2-RBIs and a run.
“Just a great game and a great day,” concluded Newland. “A lot of kids playing, eighth grade out here, varsity playing, JV playing – just good stuff.”
