GREENVILLE – The Green Wave hosted the Tri-Village Patriots in a Saturday night basketball game with Greenville earning a 63-59 overtime win.
“It’s not that they didn’t quit tonight, it’s that they haven’t quit in three and one half years,” said Greenville coach Kyle Joseph following the win. “They have been through a lot and they just keep coming back. We run four seniors out there who have been through a lot and there is no quit in them … none. Couldn’t be any prouder of them.”
Tri-Village took the opening period 10-9 with four players getting in the scoring column led by four Wilson Suggs points. DJ Zimmer pace the Wave with 5 first quarter points including a 3-pointer and a field goal.
Greenville outscored the Patriots by a point in second quarter play 17-16 to send the teams to the break with the game tied at 26-26.
The Green Wave took advantage of 10 Foster Cole third period points including two 3-pointers to outscore the visitors 18-14 and take a 44-40 lead to the final quarter of play.
The Patriots battled back to even the score at 55-55 at the end of regulation play with a strong 7-9 performance at the free throw line sending the game to an overtime period.
“I had seen them on film…the size and the length,” Coach Joseph said of Tri-Village. “A good solid team and gave us some problems. Hats off to them – they kept coming at us.”
Greenville used the overtime period to outscore Tri-Village 8-4 and earn the non-conference victory.
“Our seniors – we have six of them,” stated Coach Joseph. “Foster Cole, the game he had tonight, Marcus Wood, those are two guys who as a coaching staff, as a team, myself personally have challenged and been on as hard as anyone – all those guys and they have really responded, continued to battle and fight and try and get better every day.”
The Tri-Village coach was unavailable for comment following the game.
Foster Cole led Greenville and all scorers with a game high 26-points including four 3-pointers.
