GREENVILLE – Middle school boys interested in soccer are invited to play a soccer match with the Greenville varsity boys soccer team on the turf field along-side the GHS varsity boys team Tuesday, October 30 at 6 p.m.
“We thought it would be a way for the boys to come out and play a game,” said Greenville soccer mom, Amy Maitlen. “It seems like all numbers for high school sports, participation numbers are down so we thought the way to build your high school program is to support your youth program and get some of these fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders to come out and experience what it’s like to be part of the varsity soccer team.”
The evening at Harmon Field is scheduled to help start building the Greenville Senior High School soccer team from the youth up.
“Dave Ernst is going to announce the kid’s names like they do, just give them a taste of what it’s like,” Maitlen said. “Hopefully keep some kids that may be on the fence about whether they want to play high school ball or not interested.”
Interested boys are asked to wear cleats or tennis shoes and also bring a green and white shirt.
“Our coaches will be there,” noted Maitlen. “If parents have any questions or anything they want to ask they will have access to them at that time and just to let the boys say thank you and hopefully keep some of the younger kids, soccer in the back of their minds and come out for some good numbers for our high school soccer team.
“Mark and Jason do a great job our coaching is great. Where we lose a lot of numbers – we don’t have a junior high soccer program, so if you have played youth club all the way up and you get to junior high, and you want to play a sport, soccer is not an option there.”
The coaches are amazing, the program is great, the boys were all great this year,” said Maiten, “we’re just falling short in numbers.”
Players need to check-in at 5:45 p.m.
