GREENVILLE – The operator of a motorcycle was transported to Miami Valley Hospital and the driver of a Black Liberty Jeep was transported to Wayne HealthCare following an early morning crash at the intersection of Route 571 East and Jaysville St. Johns Road. The crash occurred around 6:19 a.m. and Darke County Deputies along with Greenville Township Fire and Rescure were dispatched.
The driver of a 2002 Jeep Liberty operated by Joseph York, 53, of Greenville, was traveling south on Jaysville St. Johns Road came to a stop at Rt. 571 and due to dense fog and pulled into the path of the oncoming westbound 2001 Harley Davidson Motorcycle operated by Gary Higgins, 57, of Greenville. The Jeep was struck on the left side by the motorcycle and Higgins was ejected from the motorcycle.
Care Flight was unable to fly due to the morning fog. The incident remains under investigation.
Higgins was transported to Wayne Healthcare by Greenville Rescue and later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. York was treated and released at the scene. Higgins was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction team was also called to the accident scene for further investigation.
This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
