County receives first insurance payout for swine barn

DARKE COUNTY – Darke County Commission on Monday accepted an insurance check in the amount of $93,566.15 – one of several payments expected as a result of the loss of the swine barn at the Darke County Fairgrounds.

The fire, which completely destroyed the swine barn in October, also damaged fencing and a couple other buildings on the fairgrounds.

According to Commissioner Mike Stegall, the amount approved Monday will cover demolition of the site as well as fencing destroyed by the fire.

An insurance check for approximately $750,000 to help cover the cost of a new swine barn, also is expected, commissioners say.

The fair board is expected to accept bids on a new swine barn in early February.

Also on Monday:

* Commissioners approved a vehicle maintenance agreement between the county and the city of Greenville.

The agreement allows county garage personnel to provide  preventive and mechanical maintenance, repairs and general service of the city’s police vehicles.

* Commissioners heard a report from Sam Custer, Darke County Extension Educator concerning local agriculture programs.
