Lady Wave drops Elite Eight tournament game

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Lady Wave softball team fell to the Jonathan Alder Lady Pioneers 5-3 in nine innings but not before making Greenville proud with yet another successful softball season.

The Lady Wave finish the 2017 season with a 28-4 record, the schools 14 consecutive season with 25 or more wins, 10 District Championships in the past 12 years and a perfect 15-0 Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) record while claiming a 2017 OHSAA Sectional Championship and an OHSAA District Championship.

Greenville used a Morgan Gilbert leadoff triple to the centerfield fence and scored on an RBI grounder off the bat of Karsyn Shaffer to lead 1-0 in the sectional championship game.

Cassie Cromwell reached by way of an infield single and scored on a Makayla Hanes double to give the Lady Wave a 2-0 lead with the Lady Pioneers coming to the plate.

Two controversial third inning calls led to the Lady Pioneers taking a 3-2 lead with the big blow a 3-run homer.

“It’s just extremely disappointing that the game is sometimes decided between things that aren’t called,” Newland stated.

The Greenville girls battle back to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth with Shaffer leading off the inning with an infield single and Cromwell drilling an double off the right field fence putting two runners in scoring position with no outs.

Makayla Hanes drove a pitch up the middle glancing off the pitcher’s glove scoring Shaffer only to have the Lady Pioneers double up throwing Cromwell out at home and Hanes at second for a double play.

The game stayed knotted at 3-3 until the bottom of the ninth until Johnathan Alder would get a lead-off single and a two-out two-run walk-off homer putting the Lady Pioneers in the OHSAA D-II Final Four.

“They’re moving on and hats off to them,” said Newland. “Storybook for them. It doesn’t get any better than a walk-off winner in extra innings. Unfortunately they made about every play out there on us, left fielder made a couple diving catches and shortstop…. They made great plays. Great ball team. Well coached ball team. You play the game three times somebody wins two, and unfortunately today wasn’t our day at all.”

Playing in their final game for the Lady Wave were seniors Alli Hill, Karsyn Shaffer, Lauren Baughn and Makayla Hanes.

The 2017 LWSB varsity team was made up of 11 freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors and four seniors.

As always, LWSB Coach Newland was appreciative for the many local fans that traveled to Mason High School for the team’s sectional play.

“There is no better feeling when everyone is behind the kids,” said Newland. “I would like to thank the community for everything throughout my 15 seasons leading the program. We do play for the name on the front, and that is what makes me so proud.”

Greenville will honor the 2017 Lady Wave softball team Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria and present awards.
